Wedding Planner Series 3, What Are My Options and How Much Are We Talking About Here?

Today we continue our series on wedding planners. You've made the decision to bring in some backup and you know that you need more help than a day of coordinator or even a week or month of coordinator to clean up the last minute details, but you still aren't convinced that a full scale wedding planner, the Cadillac of planning services, is right for you, either for your personality or for your budget. After all, you've already found your venue. You know what you want your wedding to look like. You have your dress and you've got it narrowed down, if not to a specific caterer at least to a few options. Okay so maybe not specific options, but you know that you don't want a Brazilian steakhouse experience for your wedding guests. Between the extremes of a day of coordinator and a no holds barred takeover wedding planner is the sweet spot you're looking for - a partial or part time wedding planner.

Part time planners, also sometimes called "alternative planners," are great for couples who find themselves overwhelmed late in the game. Maybe you thought you could do it yourself and you "misunderestimated" the amount of work involved. Or maybe something else has come up in your life and you simply no longer have the time to devote to all the details that crop up as you get closer to your wedding date. A part time or alternative wedding planner can jump in and pick up the reins where you've left off. After a thorough consultation with you, your part time planner will know your vision for your big day and have all the information about the vendors you've chosen to work with so far. A part time planner can fill in the blanks where you've either given up or maybe didn't even know there were blanks to fill in. Sometimes a professional planner knows questions to ask vendors that you, snow blind from all the cake tastings, dress fittings, and linen samples, didn't think of.

Of course the part time planner will also handle the tasks that a day of planner would handle. Your part time planner will be there for you on the day of your wedding, as well. He or she will ensure that vendors show up on time and in the right place, that your dress is pressed and cleaned, that your groom isn't too hungover from his bachelor party the night before, and that the seating chart is flawlessly executed. Your part time planner will direct your rehearsal and make sure the officiant has good directions to get to the venue. He or she will handle the tantrums of your tempermental caterer and keep your photographer in extra batteries for the duration of the photo shoot.

Where a part time planner shines is in bringing your vision to fruition. He or she makes sure that your grand plans don't get lost as you get overwhelmed in the final run up to your big day. The services of a part time wedding planner will generally run you from 5-8% of your wedding budget, but the service they provide can be invaluable, particularly if you find yourselves running out of steam late in the game.
