So, the families very excited, the eldest daughter got engaged nine months ago and so that has meant a lot of planning for the big day. There's many different things to organise, such as, a venue, attire, cars, a band, photographer, flowers and we think most important, an exceptional caterer. Unfortunately for you, none of these things come cheap so it takes a lot of grinning and bearing it.
You'll find it's not just the above list either, there's all sorts of 'sub contractors' involved as well. For example, you're going to have speeches and a band so you'll have to make sure there's a defined area where the band can play and if the venue is large, then where the speeches will take place as well. So, this could mean a microphone. A microphone means an amplifier plus a small speaker set up as well. This could mean an electrician to set this up unless you have a confident family member. Other things you;'ll have to ensure are in great condition, is something you may not have thought about; the plumbing. Now this is really important, especially if its at a venue that you don't know much about. So, go check the water pressure in all the taps. Have a good look around the kitchen and check the water pressure and particularly the drainage, that is, is the water draining from the sinks in an acceptable time. This kitchen is going to be flat out for some hours, so these things are critical. Also, check the cleanliness of the kitchen. If its not clean, perhaps you should look at another venue as you may not be able to trust the owners here to have it clean on the day. Finally, check the toilets and how they flush - You just don't want to get a blocked toilet on the big night.
So, lets say you've checked all the above out and it's all okay and you've got it all organized. Well, next you've got to choose a caterer. Choosing caterers is done in many different ways. Mainly it's word of mouth, or, you've been at another function that's been catered for and you've liked the food and attitude of the caterers there. Of course, you can go on the internet and check some sites out there as well.
The criteria for a good caterer though is that naturally the food is excellent as well as the service and you've got to have both. You can have great food and slow service. If that's the case there's going to be a lot of talk behind your back after the wedding. How to know? It's not easy unless you've seen them in action. If you haven't then it's going to be a judgement call on your part when you meet them.
Also, unless you are very brave and going to do this on your own, you should allow the caterers to manage all the drinks as well. If they're great then they'll do a lot better job than you on this. They'll know the best wines and natural drinks for the budget that you set.
