As a Southeast Texas native nothing is more symbolic to me of spring than azaleas in full bloom. I can't even count the number of childhood photos I have dressed in my Sunday best standing in front of a blazing hedge of azaleas.
Each year in Houston spring is ushered in with The Azalea Trail. A walking tour of public and private homes and gardens. River Oaks Garden Club, the organizer, is responsible for the maintenance of the centerpiece 14-acre gardens of the Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens (pictured above).
Azaleas come in a beautiful variety of colors. I plan to plant white ones when we buy our first home, but there is something nostalgic about the hot pink ones to me...it will be a tough decision. SPL actually likes a mix, and I think he might be on to something!
I inherited my great grandmother's china in an azalea pattern, so naturally I have had azalea-themed-brunch on the brain for the last few years. I thought what better time to start this tradition than the present!I served quiche, smoked salmon with homemade scallion cream cheese on bagels, fruit, and homemade cranberry-orange scones. I'll admit I served fruit dip just to use the neat whipped cream server below.
I was particularly proud of my first attempt at scones. Barefoot recipe of course!!
Nothing made me happier than to share a special brunch with the sweetest friends. I know I will cherish this memory, and I am already looking forward to next year!
